  • The fate of public education and therefore the future of our democracy is at risk.Powerful forces are eroding commitment to public schools and weakening democraticresolve. Yet even in deeply troubling times, it is possible to broaden social imagination andempower efforts toward systemic progressive reform. This book is an invitation for widespreadparticipation in a complex process-re-envisioning education and democracy. To reenvision-to envision and then envision again-is to join with others in imagining new possibilitiesand bringing these into existence. Re-envisioning is a radically social process.Although distinct and varied individual contributions are required, transformative visions cannotbe advanced through the agency of one charismatic person, or bound by one influentialperspective. The process of re-envisioning, like all forms of democratic living and learning, draws energy and insight when connection and communion are sustained across dimensionsof difference. Re-envisioning is an intensely creative and exploratory process. It is notaccomplished through careful construction of "best laid plans" aimed at attaining certaintyand control. Re-envisioning is instead experienced and evolved by preparing for, and thenacting on, informed and strategic glimpses. These brief and fleeting impressions-multimodaland multi-sensory, incomplete and ambiguous, always in motion-offer potentials, butno definitive answers. Re-envisioning is a profoundly ethical and aesthetic proce...

  • Democracy and Education is regarded as the seminal work on public education by one of the most important scholars of the century. It has been re-published in many editions and continuously in print ever since the original publication in 1916.John Dewey’s Democracy and Education addresses the challenge of providing quality public education in a democratic society. In this classic work Dewey calls for the complete renewal of public education, arguing for the fusion of vocational and contemplative studies in education and for the necessity of universal education for the advancement of self and society.

  • In Europe RE in schools is predominantly organised denominationally. Growing religious plurality in particular is increasingly presenting a challenge for this organisational model. The question of how RE should be organised is currently the subject of controversial debate within the field of religious education studies. Is an alternative format even thinkable for those who hold responsibility for RE in schools? This study dedicates itself to Vienna, which like other European cities, is characterised by a high degree of religious plurality. The study employs a qualitative-empirical approach, in order to take a close look at the discourse around RE within two schools for upper secondary education, where it is coming up against its organisational limits. This study analyses group discussions with RE teachers and with members of the school community committee (an elected body consisting of teacher, pupil and parent representatives, as well as the head of school). Research into these often implicit attitudes towards religion and RE is vital for the development of future oriented forms of RE. This study consequently offers a valuable contribution to context sensitive religious education studies.

Since then, interest in East German cinema has exploded, inspiring innumerable festivals, books, and exhibits on the GDR's rich and varied filmic output. In Re-Imagining DEFA, leading international experts take stock of this vibrant landscape and plot an ambitious course for future research, one that considers other cinematic traditions, brings genre and popular works into the fold, and encompasses DEFA's complex post-unification -afterlife.-

  • The six writers in this book explore the contribution and the transferability of narrative inquiry fromcurriculum studies to daily life in education and in healthcare. They examine the interconnectivity ofreconstructed experience with the construction of disciplinary identity and knowledge. Thinking narratively, they write auto/biographically about relationships between teachers, students, nurses, colleagues, and/orpeople in their care. As narrative inquirers, they are curious how research moves forward professionalsituations in education and healthcare. The narrative plotlines of knowledge construction, curriculum building and identity formation thread throughthe chapters. In education and healthcare, the reconstructed experience of a teacher is shown to befoundational to curriculum content and processes. In nursing education, we see congruence between narrativeinquiry (Clandinin & Connelly, 1995, 2000; Connelly & Clandinin, 1988, 1999) as a process that includes theteacher-researcher as co-participant; and, theorists, such as Watson (1999), include the nurse in the caringsituation as shapers of the experience of people in their care. As practitioner-researchers, teachers in educationand healthcare construct who they are and how they are in relationship in the context of social situations. Inquiry, not certainty (Dewey, 1929), is a lifestance that is formative for education.Practitioners in education and in healthcare will be interested in this book as a way to make me...

Little is discussed in academia about its effects concerning kinstate minorities who are already protected due to state legislation and unilateral or bilateral agreements. This thesis examined the ECRML and its impact in the context of language education rights concerning the Danish and German minorities living in the Schleswig border region. Using content analysis and interviews with stakeholders, it was found that it helped re-enforce and re-assure minority language rights, created formalization in the area of language education rights, re-instating funding equality, raised awareness in minority education issues to the governments involved and re-instated funding equality in the area.

  • The papers in this volume focus on fiction and theatre in their traditional forms as well as in their encounters with novel and innovative forms and avenues of dissemination. As a cultural practice that emerged from a process of protest and contestation of hegemony, it is understandable that one main concern in African literature and literary criticism is the resistance against the emergence of marginalizing centers in formerly or currently marginalized societies with regard to discourses, aesthetics and media of creation. These new centers that sometimes undermine the strategic/tactical exploitation of the relative advantage procured by each medium run the risk of leading to new forms of stratification that mitigate the import of African and African diasporic literatures. The collection of essays therefore seeks to analyze the representation of pertinent socio-political and historical questions in a variety of postcolonial texts from Africa and the African diasporas, notably the Caribbean islands and the United States of America. However, far from re-writing of history in a way that cedes to conservative worldviews, creative writers and critics simultaneously attempt to chart ways forward for socially all-inclusive futures. In the context of colonial and neo-colonial legacies that seem to forestall any sense of individual and collective self-fulfillment, contributors to this volume examine the pertinence of African fiction and theatre in imagining new vistas of re-conceptual...

  • This research monograph relates the findings of a study into the ways that survivors of domestic abuse can move on with their lives and take action to prevent their re-victimisation by returning to education. The research aim was to explore education as a means through which domestic abuse survivors may effect positive and empowering changes to their (and their children's) lives, thereby enhancing their life chances and preventing future re-victimisation.The findings show the point in their moving on process in which domestic abuse survivors decide to (re) enter education; the personal and social factors that enable them to become empowered by seeking to further their educational prospects; why and how some domestic abuse survivors seek to, and are able to, return to education; the consequences (personal, economic and social) of education for survivors; and recommendations for policy and practice in terms of strategies for information, advice and support to facilitate survivors' moving on process. The book will appeal to anyone working in the field of domestic abuse, as well as those who are or have been the target of domestic abuse.

  • Explore the complexity of teacher-student relationships in secondary school settings and learn how these largely unscripted relationships function for students and teachers in their learning and socioemotional development. For teachers, the relationships provide a foundation for pedagogical and curricular endeavors and lead to their increased investment in students’ growth, development, and academic success. Students who have such relationships feel more comfortable in their learning environments, interested in the material, and motivated to perform well. We discuss what these relationships look like from the perspectives of teacher and student. Topics include: Drawing appropriate boundaries School-provided guidelines and guidance Formats for supporting teachers A whole school approach to working on students’ emotional challenges Relationships in after-school programs. The voices of teachers and students in this volume show how much young people want to feel known and engage with teachers and how much teachers feel rewarded and invigorated by taking the step to connect with students on this level. This is the 137th volume of New Directions for Youth Development, the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series dedicated to bringing together everyone concerned with helping young people, including scholars, practitioners, and people from different disciplines and professions.

  • This book is a study of theatre's educational role during the 20th and the first years of the 21st centuries. It examines the variety of ways the theatre's educational potential has been harnessed and theorised, the claims made for its value and the tension bettween theatre as education and theatre as 'art': between theatre's aesthetic dimenstion and the 'utilitarian' or 'instrumental' role for which it has so often been pressed into service.Following a preliminary discussion of some key theoretical approaches to aesthetics, dramatic art and learning and, above all, the relationships between them, the study is organised into two broad chronological periods: early developments in European and American theatre up to the end of World War II, and participatory theatre and education since World War II. Within each period, a cluster of key themes is introduced and then re-visited and examined through a number of specific examples - seen within their cultural contexts - in subsequent chapters. Topics covered include an early use of theatre to campaign for prison reform; workers' theatre, agit-prop and American living newspapers in the 1930s; theatre's response to the dropping of the atom bomb in 1945; post-war theatre in education; theatre in prisons; and the use of performance in historic sites.

  • School is one option for education; homeschooling is the second, and unschooling is the third. Many parents are frustrated by the school system, perhaps because of bullying, crowded classrooms, and outdated, dull, online courses. Disengaged learners that have no say in their coerced curriculum tend to act out, tune out, or drop out. Education must change and unschooling is the fastest-growing alternative method of learning. Two decades ago, students registered with their local school based on their house address. Now, with the internet, students are borderless. Learning can occur anywhere, anytime, anyway and from anyone—including self-taught. Self-directing their education, unschoolers learn through: Play Projects Reading Volunteering Video games Sports Mentorship Travel Life This book explores the path of 30 unschooled children who self-directed all or part of their education and were accepted by universities, colleges, and other postsecondary schools. Most have already graduated. What children need most are close relationships-parents, teachers, siblings, relatives, coaches, and mentors within a wider community, not just within an institutional school. Educational content is everywhere. Caring relationships are not. Families that embrace unschooling, do not have to choose between a quality education and a relaxed, connected family lifestyle. They can have both.

  • A volume in Landscapes of EducationSeries Editors: William H. Schubert, University of Illinois at Chicago& Ming Fang He, Georgia Southern UniversityLove, Justice, and Education by William H. Schubert brings to life key ideas in the work of John Deweyand their relevance for the world today. He does this by imagining continuation of highly evocative articlethat Dewey published in the New York Times in 1933. Dewey wrote from the posture of having visited Utopia.Schubert begins each of thirty short chapters with a phrase or sentence from Dewey's article, inresponse to which a continuous flow of Utopians consider what is necessary for educational and socialreform among Earthlings. Schubert encourages the Utopians, who have studied Earthling practices and literatures,to recommend from their experience what Earthlings need for educational and social reform andhow they can address obstacles to that reform. The Utopians speak to myriad implications of Dewey'sreport by drawing upon a wide range of philosophical, literary, and educational ideas - including many ofDewey's other writings. Their central message is that loving relationships and empathic dedication tosocial justice are necessary for educational reform that responds wholeheartedly to learner needs and interests.True to Dewey's original position, such education must be built upon social reform that works to overcomeacquisitive society based on greed: the principal impediment to realizing human potential,dem...

  • A volume in Research in Social EducationSeries Editor Merry Merryfield, The Ohio State UniversityThe primary purpose of this book is to invite educators to (re)think what it means to critically conceptualizeknowledge about the world. In other words, imagining curriculum in a critical way means decolonizingmainstream knowledge about global societies. Such an approach re-evaluates how we have come to knowthe world and asks us to consider the socio-political context in which we have come to understand whatconstitutes an ethical global imagination. A critical reading of the world calls for the need to examinealternative ways of knowing and teaching about the world: a pedagogy that recognizes how diversesubjects have come to view the world. A critical question this book raises is: What are the radical ways ofre-conceptualizing curriculum knowledge about global societies so that we can become accountable to thedifferent ways people have come to experience the world? Another question the book raises is: how do weengage with complexities surrounding social differences such as gender, race, ethnicity, religion, etc., in theglobal contexts? Analyzing global issues and events through the prism of social difference opens up spacesto advocate a transformative framework for a global education curriculum. Transformative in the sense thatsuch a curriculum asks students to challenge stereotypes and engages students in advocating changes withinlocal/global contexts.A critical global perspectiv...
